Bio
Chancellor “Chance” Gatewood (b. 2004; he/him) is a young composer from Cary, North Carolina. Known for “fascinating exploration of textures and melody,” (Cultural Voice of North Carolina) his works consist of contemporary chamber and large ensemble music, aimed to embrace influences from the African diaspora, film/video game scores, and more.
His works have been performed nationally, with recent major performances with the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra, 2026 International Euphonium-Tuba Festival, the 2025 US Army Band’s Tuba-Euphonium Workshop in Washington D.C., and NewFound Chamber Winds Festival in Virginia. Upcoming performances include premieres with the Kingsville Winds, Øra nØir saxophone quartet, and the UNCG Wind Ensemble.
Currently, Chance is pursuing his undergraduate degrees in Music Performance in Composition and Arts Administration at UNC Greensboro, studying under Dr. Alejandro Rutty and Dr. Mark Engebretson.
Additionally, he is a part of the UNCG CVPA Dean's Advisory Council as an undergraduate representative, a Research Fellow with the UNCG URSCO, and a member of the UNCG Student Musicians’ Advocacy and Collaboration Committee. He is also a tuba primary instrumentalist studying under Dr. Stephanie Ycaza.
